Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS) is often described as the "carpal tunnel of the foot." It occurs when the posterior tibial nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the tarsal tunnel, a narrow passageway on the inside of the ankle. This compression can lead to symptoms such as burning pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the ankle into the arch and sole of the foot.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Q&A

At Acacia Foot and Ankle Surgeons, we focus on a tiered treatment strategy designed to reduce nerve pressure and restore function. Under the leadership of Dr. Khan, we emphasize conservative management first, moving toward more advanced interventions only when necessary.

  • Compression and Mechanical Support: Reducing inflammation is key to relieving nerve pressure. We often utilize specialized compression sleeves or custom orthotics to stabilize the foot, reduce swelling within the tunnel, and correct any biomechanical issues (such as overpronation) that may be exacerbating the compression.
  • Advanced Medication & Nerve Blocks: For targeted relief, we utilize localized treatments to "quiet" the inflamed nerve. This may include:
Corticosteroid Injections: To rapidly decrease swelling within the tarsal tunnel.
Nerve Blocks: To provide immediate symptomatic relief and help confirm the diagnostic origin of your pain.
  • Surgical Release: In cases where conservative measures do not provide adequate relief, or if there is a clear physical obstruction (such as a cyst or enlarged vein) pressing on the nerve, a Tarsal Tunnel Release may be indicated. This surgical procedure involves meticulously opening the flexor retinaculum to expand the space within the tunnel, permanently reducing the pressure on the posterior tibial nerve.

Our goal at Acacia Foot and Ankle Surgeons is to provide a tailored plan that addresses the specific anatomy of your foot, ensuring you can walk, run, and live without the distraction of nerve pain.
